Jonathan M. Lovitz was born July 21st, 1957 in Tarzana, California. He is one of six-children and the only boy among five sisters, including twin sister, Leslie Lovitz.
He decided he wanted a life in comedy after watching Woody Allen’s 1969 film Take the Money and Run, at age 13.
Lovitz attended the prestigious Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, and upon graduating in 1975 he continued on to the University of California at Irvine.
Jon Lovitz gained initial fame as a regular on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” where his characters such as Tommy Flanagan of pathological Liars Anonymous, the great Shakespearean ham Master Thespian, and the Devil himself became quite popular. He was part of the cast for five-years. After leaving the cast, he enjoyed continued success as an actor on film, stage and television.
But not everything came easy, in 1979 John Lovitz joined the Groundlings, an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe in Los Angeles. He was hardly making any money. His fortunes began to turn in 1984, when he appeared with the Groundlings onThe Tonight Show. The following year he got the SNL gig.
After leaving SNL in 1990, he turned in a memorable performance as a baseball scout in the 1992 film A League of Their Own, then went on to feature in such acclaimed comedies as The Wedding Singer (1998), Small Time Crooks (2000), Little Nicky (2000), Rat Race (2001), and The Producers (2001). With his performance in Small Time Crooks, Lovitz fulfilled a childhood dream of working with his idol Woody Allen.
Jon –who’s was also part of the Broadway play The Dinner Party –got involved in stand up comedy until the early 2000’s. In 2007, he founded the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club in Los Angeles, where he gives weekly standup performances. The venue has also hosted many other famous comedians from around the world.
Leslie Lovitz and her brother both seem to be very private people. Not much is known about her brother’s family or even his romantic life. He doesn’t have any children and he’s never been married.
