Jack Phillips
Jack Phillips is a Colorado cake baker who grabbed headlines after saying no to an out of the ordinary wedding cake request.
Jack Phillips was asked to do a wedding cake for a same sex marriage ceremony but he decided to pass on it, due to his religious believes. Phillips who is a Christian is the owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop –which is known in particular for its wedding cakes.
Back in the summer of 2012, Phillips was contacted by Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins to make a same-sex cake, however Jacks refused explaining he was ‘preserving his right as an artist to decide which artistic endeavors I’m going to do and which ones I’m not.”
The couple went onto sued Phillips under the grounds of Colorado’s anti-discrimination law for businesses that are open to the public. The state commission on civil rights ruled in their favor, as did the state supreme court.
Jack Phillips then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court –ultimately winning the case. According to reports, five years later after the incident, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the commission had violated Phillips’ rights under the first amendment, which guarantees freedom of expression.
Phillips who now rests assured, can be found on Mission Trace Shopping Center in Lakewood, CO; -where according to his website has been serving ‘great cakes’ since 1993. He has made of the business a famous spot for cake seekers. Masterpiece Cakeshop has been nominated to the Denver A-List, and won a coveted place in their line-up. Masterpiece Cakeshop was The Knot Best of Weddings Pick for 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2012.
According to the page, Jack’s specialty are custom designs, claiming ‘If you can think it up, Jack can make it into a cake!’ This is actually not the first time Jack rejects a cake request, according to Breakingpoint, he’s refused to make custom cakes for Halloween and divorce celebrations, and he’s turned down requests for lewd cakes for bachelor and bachelorette parties.
A Facebook page was created in order to show support for the longtime baker titled, ‘We Stand With Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop Colorado Bakery.’ Over 8K people have liked/follow the page saying they support Phillips’ ‘artistic and religious freedom, and for standing for God, his beliefs, and what is morally right!’
