Jumaane Williams
Jumaane Williams has been elected as the new Public Advocate of New York City –a role which temporarily replaces the mayor if he leaves office early.
Williams, a Democratic councilman from Brooklyn will be taking the place of Letitia James. He will serve only through the end of this year. To hold on to the position through 2021, he needs to win a primary election in June and the general election in November.
As a council member, Jumaane represents the 45th Council District in Brooklyn. He was elected in 2009, re-elected in 2013 and again in 2017. He advocates for affordable housing, anti-gun violence measures, fair policing, equity, and social justice.
Born May 11, 1976; the Brooklyn native is of Grenadian heritage. He has a sister, Jeanine –who is a nurse.
He attended Philippa Schuyler Middle School for the Gifted and Talented and Brooklyn Technical High School. He earned his bachelor’s in political science, and master’s in urban policy and administration at Brooklyn College.
Following graduation, he worked as assistant director at the Greater Flatbush Beacon School, and later went on to serve as the executive director of New York State Tenants & Neighbors. According to his city council bio, Williams is the man behind the Community Safety Act, which created the Office of Inspector General for the New York Police Department, the Fair Chance Act and Cure Violence Groups to combat gun violence. He also co-chaired the taskforce, which created New York’s Crisis Management System.
He’s had a number of successes no doubt and certainly put his name out there after he ran, and lost for lieutenant governor in the Democratic primary in 2018. However, at 42-years-old Williams appears to be a single man.
Not much is known about his private life but from what he shows on social media at least, there is no indication that he is married or that he is in a romantic relationship with someone. The question remains, who is Jumaane Williams’ Girlfriend/ Wife?
