52-year-old Naglaa Ali Mahmoud is the wife of Mohamed Morsi, the former president of Egypt. Her husband has been sentenced to 20-years in jail recent reports say.
Naglaa’s husband was the firth president of Egypt, he served from from 30 June 2012 to 3 July 2013. Following 2013 protests and the 2013 Egyptian coup d’état, he was removed by Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
According to Aljazeera, Morsi was convicted on Tuesday of ordering the arrest and torture of protesters in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.
Naglaa who refused to be called “The First Lady” instead opting for “First Servant” was born 4 July 1962 in Ain Shams, Egypt.
In 1979, Naglaa a 17-year-old student married Morsi, who is also her cousin and is over a decade her senior. The couple have 5 children together, including eldest son Ahmed, a physician. Shaima, attended Zagazig University; Osama, who is a lawyer; Omar holds a bachelor in commerce and Abdullah, a student. She is also a grandmother of at least three-grandchildren.
Following her wedding she joined her husband in California. Morsi was then a doctoral engineering student. At the time she worked as a translator for American converts to Islam. Two of her five children were born in the U.S.
Following the military coup in 2013, she has done few public appearances, the first one was in August 2013 when she told thousands of his supporters Thursday to remain defiant in the face of the military-backed government’s warnings that security forces will clear the ongoing protests, promising her husband “is coming back, God willing.” You can read the rest here.
